Brain Training Benefits May Last

A group of adults, average age 74, participated in 10 training sessions in a six-week period that focused on memory, reasoning or speed of mental processing plus four booster sessions.  A control group had no training.  After 5 years, the people who received training of any kind showed less decline in those cognitive skills.  The training group also reported fewer problems with daily tasks than the no-training group.  Researchers said that some of the benefits of the reasoning and speed-of-processing training persisted as long as 10 years.
