CELIAC DISEASE

Posted: 05.22.2018
Celiac disease is a serious genetic autoimmune disease triggered by gluten, a protein in wheat, rye and other grains. When someone with Celiac eats gluten, their body's immune system response causes damage to the lining of the small intestine. If you have a parent, child or sibling with Celiac, you should be tested for it, even if you don't have symptoms. Those with a first-degree relative with Celiac have a 10 to 15% chance of developing it. Some people who don't have the disease but are sensitive to gluten can experience gastrointestinal symptoms. If you notice a problem with gluten, it's a good idea to get tested.
