CHOKING HAZARD

Posted: 07.5.2017
Experts caution parents of small children not to let them eat whole grapes because they pose a high risk for fatal choking. In a recent report, authors stated that grapes are often larger than a young child's airway and the soft, smooth surface of the fruit allows it to easily become lodged and create a tight seal preventing any air from getting through. The grapes are difficult to dislodge by either coughing or even the Heimlich maneuver. This is true of cherry/grape tomatoes also. Experts suggest cutting foods such as these in half or even quarters before feeding them to children younger than five.
