FOLIC ACID MAY LOWER AUTISM RISK

Posted: 08.1.2018

Folic acid is a form of folate, a B vitamin. It is found in supplements and sometimes added to fortified foods.  Recent research suggests that women who take folic acid supplements before and during pregnancy may have a 50% lower risk of having a child with autism when compared to those mothers who didn't take the vitamin.  These findings are based on observational studies and cannot prove cause-and effect, only an association.  For years, the standard advice for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant is to take 400 to 800 micrograms of folic acid a day to help prevent birth defects such as spina bifida.
