New research suggests that people with type 2 diabetes who sit at a desk for long periods of time may better control their disease if they get up every 30 minutes for a 30-second walk or some leg raises or squats. In the study of sedentary, overweight adults with type 2 diabetes, when compared to only sitting, these little exercise breaks helped to significantly lower blood sugar, insulin and C-peptide (a measure of insulin secretion) levels. The resistance exercises also lowered triglycerides. Researchers say more study is needed to see if these short bouts of exercise have long-term effects on diabetes.
