LIFESTYLE & COGNITIVE RISK

New research suggests that certain lifestyle choices may affect the risk of cognitive decline. The randomized, controlled trial involved 1,200 adults between 60 and 77 who were at risk for dementia. The intervention group received specific diet recommendations, did aerobic and strength training exercises, had computer-based training to sharpen thinking skilles and attended regular meetings for social interaction. The control group got only general health advice. After 24 months, the intervention group's scores were 25% higher in overall cognitive function, 83% higher in executive function, and 150% higher in mental processing speed than the control group.
