Mediterranean Diet & Longevity

Eating a Mediterranean diet may be associated with longer telomere length, which is an indicator of slower aging and increased longevity.  Telomeres are caps on the ends of chromosomes and prevent chromosomes from fraying and scrambling the genetic code they house.  Researchers in a recent study found that for every point participants went up on a scale of 0 to 9 in adherence to the diet their telomeres were longer and aged more slowly.  A Mediterranean diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, fish and olive oil.
