There have been a number of studies regarding the power of music to
soothe and calm in surgical situations. Researchers recently studied
the effects of music played before, during and after surgery. They
found that music played at any time, but particularly before, can reduce
the pain and anxiety patients feel afterward. This even includes
patients who were under general anesthetic. It may also reduce the need
for pain medications during recovery and improve patient satisfaction.
The music didn't affect the length of their stay in the hospital. The
next time you need a medical procedure, ask your doctor if you can bring
your favorite music to play beforehand.
