Pets and Your Health
Pets can provide unconditional love and a sense of purpose. Their companionship helps stave off feelings of loneliness. They can supply opportunities for exercise, especially dogs who need to be walked daily. Studies suggest associations between pet ownership and lower blood pressure, heart rate and cholesterol. Pets can help reduce stress. A recent study revealed that when you pet your dog, oxytocin (often called the "cuddle hormone") is released in your body and that this can help lower blood pressure and reduce stress.
