Pistachios & Diabetes Risk

Posted: 04.17.2015

Pistachios may lower the risk of diabetes in people with prediabetes (having blood sugar levels higher than normal but not high enough to be diabetes), according to a new study.  Participants were divided into two groups.  The diet for one group included 2 oz. of pistachios a day; the control group had a similar diet with equivalent calories but without pistachios.  The pistachio group had improvements in blood sugar and insulin levels and also an increase in the hormone that helps regulate glucose levels.  Experts say to eat pistachios in place of and not in addition to other foods so as not to increase total daily calorie intake.
