Preparations for Donating Blood
According to the American Red Cross, one pint of blood can save up to three lives. If you are going to donate blood, here are some tips to prepare so your act of kindness doesn't leave you listless and tired. In the weeks before donating, eat plenty of iron-rich foods, such as red meat, poultry, leafy greens, beans, raisins and iron-fortified cereal. Avoid fatty foods right before donating; they can affect the tests done on your blood. Drink extra fluids before the donation, about 16 ounces of water or another non-alcoholic drink. Get plenty of sleep the night before you donate.
