PREVENTING GOUT FLARE-UPS

Posted: 08.30.2017

Gout is a very painful form of arthritis. It's caused by a build-up of uric acid that forms crystals that settle in the joints, usually beginning with the big toe. The following may help prevent flare-ups. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products. Limit intake of red meats, seafood and poultry to no more than 6 oz. per day. Drink plenty of fluids, particularly water. Avoid or limit intake of sweets, sweetened drinks and alcohol, especially beer. Try to maintain a healthy body weight; losing excess weight can help reduce levels of uric acid in your body. Vitamin C can also help lower uric acid levels.
