PREVENTING HEARTBURN

Posted: 03.22.2017
Maintain a healthy diet; excess pounds can put pressure on the abdomen, forcing acid up into the esophagus. Avoid trigger foods such as fatty or fried foods, caffeine, alcohol, peppermint or chocolate. Eat smaller meals. Try to eat three or four hours before bed. Elevate the head of your bed; use sturdy blocks to raise the head of the bed or a foam wedge between the mattress and box spring. Do not use extra pillows; this can put upward pressure on the stomach. Sleep on your left side to calm heartburn; sleeping on your right side aggravates it. Don't smoke: it weakens the muscle that keeps food from backing up into the esophagus.
