Taking Blood Pressure at Home
To get more consistent, accurate blood pressure readings at home, measure your pressure the same time each morning and evening. Use the same arm. Take your pressure before taking blood pressure medication. Also, take it before you eat food or use caffeine or alcohol, or at least a half hour after. Use the bathroom before; a full bladder can raise readings a little. Sit with both feet on the floor. Rest your arm, palm up, on a table or arm of a chair so that it is even with your heart. Place the cuff around your bare arm, not over clothing. If you roll up a sleeve, make sure it doesn't constrict the arm. Sit quietly before taking a reading.
