USE IT OR LOSE IT

Challenging your brain may help your mind stay sharp. A new study involving older adults separated participants into high or low mental challenge groups for 14 weeks, or in a control group. Those in the high-challenge group spent 15 hours per week learning increasingly more demanding skills in either quilting or digital photography or both. The low-challenge group did socializing and activities related to cooking or travel but without active learning. The control group watched classic movies, listened to music or played simple games. At the end of the study, the high-challenge group scored better on memory tests than the other group.
