Muscle strength plays a key role in our health, especially as we age. Strength training helps retain muscle and also helps maintain bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Strong muscles also help to lessen the pain of arthritis and protect cartilage. Strong muscles help stabilize joints, improve balance, and prevent falls and injuries. Strength training can greatly increase ability to perform everyday activities and improve your quality of life. Recent research also suggests that aerobic exercise and strength training can sharpen cognitive skills in older adults. Talk with your doctor before starting a new exercise regimen.
