Ways to Increase the NEAT in Your Day
NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) is the energy (calories) burned from activity other than exercise. Housecleaning, doing stairs, yardwork, carrying groceries or just sitting less are part of your daily NEAT. NEAT may not be as beneficial as regular exercise, but all physical activity is key to staying healthy and independent as you age. Here are some ways to increase your NEAT, especially if you struggle to exercise. Stand while on the phone, take the stairs instead of the elevator, park in the farthest spot from the door, jog in place during commercials, garden, wash your car, organize closets, or dance around while cleaning.
